Dear Pro Bono Institute Members, Friends and Supporters,

As Chair of the Board of Directors of the Pro Bono Institute, I am heartened by the pivotal role played by the Institute in promoting and enhancing access to justice. For the major law firms, corporate legal departments, and public interest groups it serves, the Institute is a wellspring of innovation, a trusted source of high-quality information, research, materials, and training, and an inspirational partner in their efforts to make equal justice for all a reality. Reaching beyond these primary audiences, the Pro Bono Institute works closely with the media to ensure that PBI's issues - access to justice and pro bono service - are fully and accurately covered and with the academy to further develop the ethical and intellectual underpinnings of its work.

The achievements of this youthful and small organization (established in 1996 with a current complement of seven dedicated full-time staff members) are extraordinary and exciting. They range from recalibrating and redefining appropriate levels of pro bono performance at major law firms to creating an appetite among those firms for transactional pro bono to the creation or replication of key innovations such as signature projects, pro bono partnerships between law firms and corporate legal departments, rotation programs, and pro bono infrastructure. The Pro Bono Institute's guidance reflects both the complexity of modern law practice and the yearning for greater meaning in that practice. Its work blends idealism with pragmatism, doing well and doing good, and intellectual rigor with public service.

We invite you to become part of the the Institute's exciting agenda. Larger law firms, corporate legal departments, and individual lawyers can participate through PBI's training and consultative services and by becoming individual or institutional sponsors and supporters. For those whom we cannot assist directly, we offer this content-laden website as an introduction to our work.

James W. Jones
Chair, Pro Bono Institute Board of Directors
