Pro Bono Gift Guide

Another tie?  A gift card?  Choosing the perfect gift during the holiday season is always a challenge.  Fortunately, The PBEye is here to help once again.  Here are some antidotes to the runaway consumerism that can overwhelm us at this time of year.

We recently reviewed Gideon’s Army, an access-to-justice-themed documentary that premiered on HBO this past summer and has been showing at film festivals across the country.  The film follows public defenders in the Deep South who are faced with staggering caseloads and insufficient resources as they struggle to provide effective representation to low-income defendants in a criminal justice system pushed to its limits.

ShowMarqueeThis powerful documentary is one of our favorite things this year; we can’t stop thinking about it.  Looking for a meaningful gift?  Give tickets to a screening in your area!  If a screening isn’t scheduled close by, you can even request to bring the film to your local theater.  Spread the gift of Gideon’s Army to your entire community and raise awareness about the state of our public defender systemGideon’s Army had a profound impact on us here at The PBEye and is certainly a must-see film.

Check out some of our past gift recommendations for more light-hearted inspiration.   Mommy and Daddy Do It Pro Bono, a cute book that aims to inspire the next generation to give back to their communities and explores the importance of social responsibility, or The Power of Pro Bono, a gorgeous book that explores 40 pro bono design projects, would make great gifts for pro bono junkies.  And, you can always do more pro bono work – sometimes the best gift you can give someone is your time!
