2026 FIPBD Event Impact Summary: Financial and Insurance Industries Drive Impact on Seventh Annual Pro Bono Day

April 30, 2026, marked the seventh annual Financial Institution Pro Bono Day® (FIPBD®) event led by PBI Corporate Pro Bono (CPBO) project in partnership with legal departments across the financial and insurance sectors and their law firm and legal services partners. Pro bono leaders collaborated across organizations for this industry day of pro bono service to deliver approximately 80 pro bono service and training opportunities, expanding access to justice for underserved communities through a wide range of legal support.

The FIPBD event expands access to justice for low-income and marginalized communities while fostering cross-sector collaboration and strengthening a culture of pro bono across the financial and insurance industries. In addition to legal clinics and training sessions, participating organizations hosted research projects, educational initiatives, and volunteer activities that advanced broader public interest and capacity-building efforts. Together, participants demonstrated how pro bono service advances fairness, dignity, and the public good, exemplifying what it means to be #ProBonoProud through collective action and sustained engagement.

Impact Across the FIPBD Event

As part of this year’s FIPBD event, 36 financial and insurance company legal departments and their partners came together to address critical legal needs in their communities. More than 940 in-house lawyers and legal staff participated in an FIPBD event, offering legal support and guidance on a wide range of issues affecting low-income and marginalized individuals. More than 540 law firm volunteers joined their in-house colleagues. Together, volunteers provided direct legal services, conducted research and resource development projects, participated in trainings, and helped strengthen the long-term capacity of community organizations and pro bono programs.

Legal services provided included:

  • Support for formerly incarcerated individuals, including expungement and record sealing
  • Family law services for individuals and families, including divorce, custody, child support, and conservatorship matters
  • Immigration services for immigrant communities, including asylum-related support, re-parole, adjustment of status, and naturalization applications
  • Housing assistance for tenants, including repairs, rent disputes, eviction-related guidance, and succession rights
  • Legal support for older adults and families, including wills, advance directives, and powers of attorney
  • Financial and consumer advocacy for individuals facing economic hardship, including credit report correction, debt issues, and consumer protection matters
  • Legal services for veterans, including benefits counseling and discharge upgrade support
  • Legal assistance for small businesses, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs, including contracts, governance, and compliance
  • Research and resource development projects supporting areas such as anti-trafficking, scam prevention, climate commitments, and foster youth mental health
  • Training and capacity-building sessions equipping volunteers to engage in pro bono work across practice areas
  • and so much more

Collectively, FIPBD event volunteers provided pro bono legal services to more than 1,400 clients, including more than 1,340 individuals and more than 80 small businesses and nonprofit organizations. Across the FIPBD event, volunteers not only helped clients address immediate legal needs, but also contributed to longer-term efforts to expand access to justice, strengthen community organizations, develop lasting resources, and build future pro bono capacity.

A Shared Commitment to Pro Bono

This year, 36 legal departments from the financial and insurance sectors organized or participated in an FIPBD event, demonstrating a continued commitment to pro bono collaboration and expanding access to justice through industry-wide service. At least 11 additional legal departments from other industries participated in an FIPBD event. CPBO project team members also joined these legal departments in volunteering at FIPBD events.

Reflections from the Day

The FIPBD event demonstrated the meaningful impact that collaborative pro bono service can have on both volunteers and clients. Across a wide range of clinics, hotlines, trainings, and legal service projects, participants reflected on the importance of listening to clients, providing practical legal support, and working alongside colleagues and community partners to expand access to justice.

Volunteers expressed appreciation for the opportunity to use their professional skills to directly support individuals and communities in need. Many highlighted the rewarding nature of the experience, the value of collaboration with colleagues, law firms, and legal services organizations, and the importance of creating accessible opportunities for lawyers and legal staff to engage in meaningful pro bono service.

Volunteers conducted state-specific research to support survivors of scams, fraud, and cybercrime through a virtual Scam Justice Legal Clinic (SJLC) in collaboration with Davis Wright Tremaine. The clinic began with a 30-minute training on the scam prevention legal landscape, followed by research assignments in which volunteers identified practical resources across 41 states to assist individuals harmed by cybercrime, such as victim compensation programs, government support offices, pro bono referral organizations, and relevant legislation. The resulting research is being used to support pro bono clients and expand SJLC’s resource offerings.
